For the first time since 2003, Roger Federer did not come into Roland Garros as one of the top two favourites to win the title. But after his clean and impressive 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over France’s Gael Monfils, the Swiss appears ready to give the red hot Novak Djokovic a tussle in the semifinals.
« It’s definitely always nice to be in semifinals of a Grand Slam, » Federer said. « It’s where the media attention is the highest and the matches are the toughest. I hoped to play well here with a tricky draw similar to Novak and Rafa. I think we all had tough draws. I’m happy that I made my way through to the semis and I never diverted from my plan of focusing on myself and not on someone else. »
